The Location

The Area

The north-east part of Zanzibar Island is known as Matemwe. This area is famous for its fine sand beaches, the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean and the beauty of the coral reef around the Mnemba Island.

Here the tides govern the rhythm of the day. At high tide the fisherman stream across the lagoon in their billowing dhows, delivering a dream opportunity for any photographer - and the lodge is a daily stop for the fishermen who sell fresh crab, lobster and fish to Matemwe for lunches and dinners. At low tide the sea goes right out making the lagoon too shallow for swimming but it does reveal a fascinating reef which you can explore for hours.

One of the main attractions of Matemwe is the world class diving at Mnemba Atoll. This is one of the best places for snorkeling and diving off Zanzibar, with a high chance of seeing turtles and wild dolphins in addition to the diverse and colourful coral reef fish.

Situated slightly north of THE lodge in an elevated position, the Retreat enjoys unspoilt views through palm trees of the Indian Ocean and Mnemba Island. Wooden walkways allow guests of the Retreat to access the main lodge should they wish to use any of the facilities or dine in the restaurant.

Matemwe is just 60 minutes drive from Stone Town, allowing for easy day trips and excursions to all corners of this fascinating island.

Guest Reviews

The rooms are beautiful and relaxing. The private roof deck is a great spot to lounge, and the private pool is a must given the heat! Our butler, George, was excellent! We had never had a butler before, so found it a little awkward, but that was no fault of George's. The food was excellent and we were stuffed the entire time. The scuba center, ScubaFish is top notch. A great relaxing holiday!

My wife and I decided on Matemwe retreat for our honeymoon. Upon arrival we were met by Martin, our butler, who took us through to our villa Nuru. The place is amazing and was certainly everything we had hoped for! Everything and anything is catered for and Martin went out of his way to ensure that we had the most memorable honeymoon. We will certainly be back next year as Matemwe just allows you to get away from everything and relax. Thanks to all the staff that made our honeymoon unforgettable and especially Martin for an unbelievable experience!"

This place is everything it says on the tin and more. We stayed in the Retreat - our own villa, plunge pool and sunbathing on the flat roof with long sofa seating in the shade and bedroom, bathroom, outside verandah on ground level. Views of the ocean and the fishermen and palm trees - bliss. We had our own 'butler' George who was brilliant - very personal, tailored attention - comes when you want something or meal times and stays away when you don't! The whole team are very friendly and although we only met other guests on the BBQ night when we went down to the lodge for dinner - everyone seemed mellow and relaxed. We stayed four nights - and will definitely return. The Spa is stupendous - the messages are to die for if you like it strong to relive the tension of two weeks safari- ing

We recently spent a week of our honeymoon at the Matemwe Retreat. I could not be happier with the choice of staying at the Matemwe Retreat. The staff - whether it's the management, the servers in the dining room, the bartenders, the spa, or the housekeeping - all were extremely professional - and knew our names on day 1. The food was excellent - better than any meal we had eaten during our 3 weeks in Africa. The property itself is beautiful and serene. The beach is not meant for swimming - and that was ok for us - we were much more interested in the views, the people, the charm - and we ended up taking a drive to a nice swimming beach for a 1/2 day. Glad we stayed in a quiet place instead of the tourist traps of the main beaches of Zanzibar.
We will recommend the Matemwe to all our friends that plan to visit Zanzibar!

We arrived not knowing what to expect since the approach was daunting, What we found was the most wonderful, relaxing resort on the water in our private villa, with superb staff, management and food. Martin was our outstanding, pleasant and attentive "butler." His response to any need was "no problem!" Sandy, the manager, made sure that the resort ran efficiently but with a very personal touch. While this was not a honeymoon for us, nonetheless we felt as if we were honeymooners. This was the most perfect place to spend time post safari. If we're ever in "the neighborhood" again you can bet we will stay there! I envy anyone who has the opportunity to stay there since we left.

Matemwe is on the last strip of sand before the beaches give way to cliffs on the dry north-east coast of the island, which feels very unspoilt (in neighbouring Matemwe village, people still make their living from fishing and selling coconuts). It is honeymoon heaven here. Overlooking a shallow, rocky lagoon fringed by a coral reef, the double-storey thatched villas are wonderful for hanging out in a hammock on your balcony, or taking a dip in your private rooftop pool while watching fleets of dugout canoes and dhows sail with the tide.
